Comment on The History of Washington Dulles Airport by Richard (A former Air Wisconsin employee at Dulles) /dulles-airport-history/#comment-41 Tue, 28 Apr 2020 18:49:27 +0000 /#comment-41 Independence Air was originally Atlantic Coast Airlines (ACA), which operated as both a United Express and Delta Connection regional carrier until the summer of 2004 when they began operations as Independence (which then faltered in 2006 as no one was willing to fly on them as they didn’t fly anywhere people wanted to go). Prior to their departure from the United Express family, they had flown United Express flights out of the A Concourse, but with the transition, United needed a new temporary concourse to replace the lost gates in A which ACA would be keeping. Hence they built the G Concourse, which began limited service via a bus link from the C Concourse in June of 2004 (as the interior of the building was still being finished at that time), before opening to the public in July of 2004. When Independence went under, United took over the gates in the A Concourse and the airport then demolished the G Concourse. But United hadn’t used the T gates in years by that point, which were used sparingly by US Airways Express at that time.

When I took the flight (back in July), the flight was almost completely full, both in economy and in business.

Comment on A Guide To Long-Haul Business Class Seats by Julian /long-haul-business-class-compilation/#comment-35 Sun, 15 Sep 2019 12:45:42 +0000 /#comment-35 In reply to Derek Choi.

Thanks for the two edits – I’ll make sure to update the article! I also feel that the Apex (now Serenity) suites are much better than some (if not most) staggered seats and that they are definitely underrated.

We just took a taxi from the airport – make sure you negotiate the price before you get in the car with the driver.

Comment on A Guide To Long-Haul Business Class Seats by Derek Choi /long-haul-business-class-compilation/#comment-32 Sat, 14 Sep 2019 05:33:48 +0000 /#comment-32 Great read and really helpful! I couldn’t think of anything missing. Just a few corrections though:
– Rockwell Collins is now Collins Aerospace, and the Apex Suites are now named the Serenity Suites.
– Delta’s A330neo has Thompson Vantage seats, not Vantage XL seats, because the A330 fuselage is not wide enough to have the XL seat with doors. They just used the original Vantage seat in a 8 column arrangement (like on a 767) instead of a 9 column arrangement, using the extra width remaining for the doors.

I really like the Serenity Suites on Korean’s 777s and 747s. While the finishes are not the best, they are arranged in 6 columns, rather than 7 on Japan Airlines. The Apex/Serenity are really just slightly narrower first class seats and are arranged in 6-7 columns opposed to 8 like on other staggered seats like the Vantage XL. It’s too bad most travelers see them as high density narrow seats when they hear the 2-2-2 arrangement, even though other more traditional staggered seats that market themselves as 1-2-1 are really 2-4-2 if you look closer. They only feel like 1-2-1 because the seats are more staggered than the Serenity ones, and as a result feel farther apart. Airbus actually gave the option for airlines to install a 2-2-2 first class on the A380 lower deck with the Solstys Class 180 seat, although no airlines actually went through with that.
